Are you planning for your own portrait session on the beach? I am a portrait & wedding photographer based in Emerald Isle, NC, and each year I photograph dozens of couples and families here. Through my years of experience, I have picked up a few key tips for you when choosing your own outfits.

Below are my top three tips on how to choose an outfit for your beach portrait session. These are simple yet very impactful.

#1 Choose complementary colors

I advise being too “matchy-matchy”, this can quickly age your photographs. Instead, choose cohesive and complementary colors to the people you will be photographed with. Outfits that photograph the best on the beach are the ones that have a relaxed, coastal feel to them. When choosing the colors of your outfits consider the colors of your surroundings: Blues, tans, whites, soft pinks, and even soft muted greens are always a great choice!

I recommend avoided bright, neon colors and also small patterns. Larger patterns photograph better!

2. Avoid Trending Outfits

I always recommend keeping the trendy outfits for another day. Since we are creating timeless works of art that you will most likely want to display in your home, wearing a trendy look can quickly cause your photographs to look dated. When in doubt, a white dress is always a great idea for a female. And men, you cannot go wrong with a button down paired with a nice pair of pants.

3. Dresses with movement are gorgeous

Creating movement through the photographs I capture is one way to bring the viewers in and have them feel what was going on. It’s little things like this that make photographs so impactful. One of my favorite ways to capture my subjects on the beach is to have them walk together. When a woman is wearing a flowing dress, it takes things to a new level!
