Are you planning for your own portrait session on the beach? I am a portrait & wedding photographer based in Emerald Isle, NC, and each year I photograph dozens of couples and families here. Through my years of experience, I have picked up a few key tips for you when choosing your own outfits.
Below are my top three tips on how to choose an outfit for your beach portrait session. These are simple yet very impactful.
#1 Choose complementary colors
Choosing cohesive and complementary colors to not only the people you will be in photographs with but also to the natural setting is one way to elevate your photos. The best colors to stick to when photographing on the beach are blues, tans, whites, soft pinks, and even soft muted greens. Think about the colors of your surroundings, from the blue in the ocean and sky to the tones of the seagrass and sand.
2. Avoid Trending Outfits
I always recommend keeping the trendy outfits for another day. Since we are creating timeless works of art that you will most likely want to display in your home, wearing a trendy look can quickly cause your photographs to look dated.
3. Dresses with movement are gorgeous
Creating movement through the photographs I capture is one way to bring the viewers in and have them feel what was going on. It’s little things like this that make photographs so impactful. One of my favorite ways to capture my subjects on the beach is to have them walk together. When a woman is wearing a flowing dress, it takes things to a new level!
